Executive summary

Task Management is of special interest to the NEPOMUK Social Semantic Desktop as the structuring and handling of work activities is a crucial part of every knowledge worker's daily work. In reality ? and in NEPOMUK ? every information element a knowledge worker has to deal with can be interpreted as a trigger or incentive for activity. Consequently, any information element can be interpreted as a task in NEPOMUK, just by creating the appropriate semantic annotation.

The final NEPOMUK task management prototype comprises the conceptual framework for describing tasks in detail, delivered as the Task Management Model Ontology (TMO). The TMO presents a number of classes and relations which form the basis for the task-related services supporting the knowledge worker.

Furthermore, the prototype contains two implemented API sets. The Task Service API is a lightweight interface for manipulating and transferring tasks; it provides methods and services which interact directly with the RDF representation of the TMO instances. The Semantic Task Management Framework (STMF) is a richer API which provides a bundle of desktop services which support task-related user activities on the desktop. As such, STMF offers services which are oriented towards high- level user activities, including personal task management, task delegation, task synchronization, task-based collaboration, and the abstraction and re-use of task pattern.

Finally, the prototype comprises a number of support tools and graphical user interfaces. The DisTREEbute task editor gives access to the semantic web structure resulting from the interlinked tasks and resources in a user's desktop; it offers a tree-structured overview of the user's task- related information space. It supports inbox/outbox functionalities and allows the visual control of information sharing in case of task delegation, following the principle of 'what you see is what you share'. The KASIMIR toolbox contains task handling plug-ins for common desktop tools (i.e. e- mail clients and web browsers) and a stand-alone GUIs for task handling support, the Kasimir Task Organizer (a 'Task Sidebar') .

The task management prototype has been evaluated in two different ways. This document presents results of a service-oriented assessment of the task management components, focusing on code-oriented measures like complexity, coherence, and performance. In addition, the KASIMIR toolbox has been evaluated by end users in the context of the case study WP10000: Organizational Knowledge Management. The results of this evaluation are documented in D10.3.
